The Back Story

Over the years we have observed, whether through hands-on experience or research, the many different levels of brand engagement. The spectrum ranges from companies that simply exist on one end, to companies who live and thrive as an intrinsic part of today's culture on the other. After looking under many rocks and pondering everything from branding and culture to hospitality and happiness, we here at TŌDEM have come up with our own ideas on branding. Based on proven science, we have found the best brands, both large and small, tend to resonate with others in five distinct areas - function, perception, language, people, and most importantly, purpose. These five components utilize all elements of the human experience and together, create The Living Brand.

The 5 Components

1. Function

First and foremost, you must have a good product or service that others want or need. It must literally “function” well or serve its intended functional purpose in a manner that satisfies your target audience. Your function is what you do for, or sell to, others in the literal sense.

2. Perception

Your company is physically perceived by others based on how they experience your service or product with their five senses. This includes your visual brand, packaging, stationery, office environment, the taste of the food, and even the smells in the parking lot. All of these can make or break a first impression.

3. Language

The spoken word is essential to communication. But what’s equally as important is how it is spoken. What you say and how you say it not only sheds light on your personality, it makes all the difference in the world in getting the right message out to the right people.

4. People

The human component of business is becoming more and more relevant as the rise of social media and the vast ways to instantly connect permeate our culture. People are looking for deeper connections with others and that includes your employees, clients and customers.

5 - Purpose

It has been scientifically proven that individuals with a higher sense of purpose are more successful, more creative and lead more fulfilling lives. The same applies to successful brands. When a company knows why they exist and uses its defining principles to faithfully lead all of their endeavors including branding, key decision making and even hiring - longevity, brand loyalty, and success are sure to follow. Finding purpose is the secret ingredient.

How Do You Stack Up?

Fundamentally, branding is a profound manifestation of the human condition. It is about belonging: belonging to a tribe, to a religion, to a family.

Our Brands

Watching our clients bring their vision, lifelong dreams or big ideas to life is why we do what we do. It’s one of the most rewarding things out there. When they bring us on board, it’s a privilege. Our job is to ensure they get off to the best start or restart possible by sharing with them our knowledge and talents. Here are a few of our clients who've set themselves apart by adhering to our advice… put your purpose, mission, and values at the heart of your brand.

Davis Orthodontics

Davis Orthodontics needed a fresh look that captured the personality and energy of Dr. Buddy and his staff. We needed it to appeal to both kids and their parents. Our mission was to develop a brand that was both fun and energic, yet somewhat conservative and professional. We landed on a clean, modern version of Dr. Buddy’s iconic bowtie and brought in loads of fun with three colorful patterns.
